Simple, Practical Ideas to Seed Social Change
- Often, public libraries accept purchase suggestions from its patrons. (In my hometown, our library actually solicits suggestions.) Recently, I began submitting new titles of books and magazines about sustainable living. Next time I pop in for a visit, I'm also going to ask them (sweetly) to publish a list of good 'sustainable living' reads. We have lots of lists for things like romance, mystery, or Canadian fiction so why not sustainable living? It's worth a try.
- Raise awareness. Host a screening of the documentary, The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream. Read the handy guidebook that outlines ways to organize a screening event.
- Join (or start) a Freecycle groupin your home area. Currently, there are 3,155 Freecycle communities around the globe with over 1.7 million members. The FreecycleTM Network provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person's trash can truly be another's treasure! There is only one main rule of engagement: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.
