The English word meditation can refer to any of a number of psychological and spiritual practices. The range of practices is so vast that it is difficult to make accurate statements about meditation in general. In some practices, the mind thinks around a certain subject; in others the mind is made to focus on a single stimulus; in others a choiceless awareness is encouraged; in others the imagination is directed toward deliberate visualization of certain imagery; and so on.

While meditation is most often associated with religions originating in Asia, the Christian contemplative tradition also includes certain forms of meditation (meditatio) as part of the practice of prayer.
